What are domain auctions?

Domains are more than a web address. They often have value that extends well beyond their initial registration price. Depending on how memorable it is or how well it ranks on Google, a domain that initially cost a few bucks can be worth a lot of money to the right buyer.

That’s why domain auctions exist – to give domain owners an opportunity to sell their name for a profit, and give buyers a chance to get a name that can take their website to the next level.

Frequently Asked Question (FAQs)

What is a domain auction?

Answer: GoDaddy’s domain auction space serves as a “marketplace” for buyers and sellers to get together and make deals. When a domain expires, it typically goes right back to the registry. If it’s a valuable domain name, however, registrars will try to sell it through auction, and buyers are always eager to capitalize on potential deals. Participating in a domain auction can be a nuanced business, so take a look at our Auctions FAQ page for more details on the process.

Why should I use GoDaddy to buy and sell my domains?

Answer: GoDaddy offers a variety of benefits when you choose to buy or sell your domain with us. We have a unique Auction bidder verification process that protects both buyers and sellers from any kind of fraudulent activity. We also offer a handy Investor mobile app for iOS or Android that allows you to watch auctions in real time and view their history (including number of bidders and how much they bid), all from the convenience of your smartphone.

Do I need a membership to participate in GoDaddy’s domain auctions?

Yes, you’ll need to purchase a GoDaddy Auctions ® membership for $4.99/year before you can participate in an auction. And rest easy with our verified bidder process —a surefire method that safeguards you against any fraudulent activity during an auction.

After joining the auction community, you’ll quickly learn how to navigate the world of domain buying and selling and can begin to make money by investing in domain names.

How do I sell my domain?

So, it’s time for you to sell your domain. Here are the simple steps to pricing, listing and selling your domain through GoDaddy.
1. Find out what your domain is worth.
You’ll want to set a realistic price. Often, people list their domains for a price higher than someone is willing to pay. One place to find out the sale prices of comparable domains is free GoDaddy Domain Value Appraisal Tool.
The GoDaddy Domain Value and Appraisals tool uses machine learning to predict the value of your domain. It uses mass quantities of data and word tokenization to produce a model that can assess a domain’s value.
Just type in the domain you want to sell and you’ll learn the estimated value, and well as comparable domains sold. Even better, it’s all free.
2. Make communication easy.
Be sure to expose your contact information on WHOIS. That way, when an interested buyer looks up your domain on WHOIS, they can find your publicly available information and contact you directly.
3. Put out a “For Sale” sign.
If you haven’t already, set up a single-page website on your domain, called a park page or domain parking. This page lets visitors know that the domain is owned and for sale. You can learn more about park pages and the benefits of having advertising on that page. It’s the simplest way to announce your domain is for sale. But to announce it far and wide, you’ll want to list your domain on some online marketplaces.
4. List your domain on online marketplaces.
List your domain name on Afternic. It’s “the big name” in after-market sales and is a platform with a vast audience. Learn more about selling your domain on Afternic.
You can also link your Afternic account with your GoDaddy account so you can manage your sales from inside your account. In addition to Afternic, you’ll want to list your domain on GoDaddy Auctions. GoDaddy Auctions is an aftermarket venue where expired domain names that have not been renewed, and domain names that people want to sell, are listed for either “buy now” prices or as traditional auctions.
